Log Scriber frequently asked

Following are some commonly asked questions regarding the Curio Log Scriber:

Can I buy your Curio Scriber anywhere else?
The Curio Scriber is only available exclusively through this site in New Zealand.

Are you the distributor and if so who makes the Curio Scriber?
The Curio Scriber has been designed in-house and has been manufactured here in Christchurch, New Zealand. Some of the parts have been out sourced from around the world.

How accurate is the Curio Scriber?
To within ±0.5mm for both pens in all directions.  The level vials have a sensitivity of 0.5° per 2mm of bubble movement.

Would there be any deal if I buy, say, 3 scribes?
The price of the Curio Scriber has been kept to a minimum already, so therefore no discount. As you will be aware you will make huge savings in time and money by using ‘self-leveling’ Curio Scribers as compared to ‘non self-leveling’ type scribers available on the market.

Box lots of 7 and 12 Curio Scribers are available and will attract a discount.

How will the scriber be posted to me?
All Curio Scribers are dispatched in a padded aluminium case to safely store your investment after each use. This padded case is then further wrapped in a bubble wrap and then placed in a cardboard box to ensure your investment is protected while in transit to you. This has proven very successful in ensuring you receive your Curio Scribers as if you had just bought them from a store.

However the delivery does not cover insurance or track & trace, and is at the purchasers risk.  Any damage that may arise from postal handling will be negotiated on a case by case basis.

How long will my scriber take to get to me?
On average about 10 working days.

How many inches can the scriber open to?
From ½ an inch out to almost 10 inches.

Can you explain the self adjustment to me, i.e. how do the bubbles stay plum?
As the Curio Scriber is self leveling you don’t require a leveling plate on a tree. You simply loosen the thumb screws, set the gap you require after rough notching, retighten the thumb screws, adjust (rotate the pen holders) the pens to point the way you want them and start scribing. The bubbles are all set plumb by design of the vial block and precision machining of the components. No more going over to your leveling plate and sharpening pencils.

The ‘bullseye’ bubble can be used if you prefer to line up one bubble between the lines, instead of two bubbles.

Can I use the single round bubble on your scriber?
Yes you can, if you prefer lining up one bubble instead of two bubbles. The Curio Scriber comes complete with a ‘bullseye’ single level bubble as an option, which can be easily attached to the top of the level.

Can you rotate the pen heads to be at right angle to the arms of the scriber?
Yes you can. They swivel through 360 degrees and hold at the position you stop in through their unique design.

Are pens included with the scriber?
The Curio Scriber comes complete with pens already installed in the two pen holders. Two spare pens are also included in the purchase price. Spare pens are sold separately and we keep good stocks of replacement pens ready for dispatching. We have checked the availability of the ink pens from our supplier and have been assured that their supply is and will continue to be readily available.

Do you have a blank to replace one pen, so as to mark only one log?
For a blank pen, you can sacrifice one pen and drill a small hole in the back of the pen to empty the pen of ink, thus it won’t scribe a line. As the pen is pressurized you need to be particularly careful and ensure you practice safety including wearing protective eyewear.

Is the ink waterproof and will it run when wet in the rain or snow?
The pens are a pressurised ink pen that work in dry and wet conditions. They even work in water, ideal if you were to go through a puddle of water on a log.

How long will the ink last?
Depending on usage, they have lasted more than one log house.

How well do the pens work in freezing weather?
Perfectly. After a few hours in our chest freezer the pens started flowing immediately upon using.

I like your design but don’t want it to be a hassle to get ink?
We have checked the availability of the ink pens from our supplier and have been assured that their supply is and will continue to be readily available. We keep good stocks of pens on hand for log builders needing spares.

Will the Curio Scriber withstand the use on a log building yard?
The nature of log construction involves working from heights, with heavy equipment and heavy logs. As the scribers are a precision instrument and very light in comparison, they should be returned to their protective case when not in use to get maximum life from your investment.

Why should I purchase a 'self-leveling' scriber over a 'non self-leveling' scriber?
How many times do you have to sharpen the pencils, check the non self-leveling plate scribers on the leveling plate, tighten the thumb screws, go to start scribing, break the pencil lead, go back to the leveling plate, sharpen the pencil, ….? I am sure you know the story. How long does this time take out of your day? You'll be surprised at the cost and the savings you could make!

Are the pens you supply available in different colours?
The colour has been limited to blue to keep costs at a minimum. This is also the colour of preference among log builders.

I am left handed, so will I have to use the Curio Scriber in my right hand?
No, you will note that the Curio Scriber is symmetrical about the centerline of the arms, which makes it easy to handle in either left or right hand. Pens holders swivel 360 degrees and hold in the position you set them to. And you have the choice of either the double bubble or the ‘bullseye’ single bubble vial.
